Riverhill Angie's Bert "Max"

Max was born April 2005. He resides in Newaygo, MI with Cindy and Gary Nestle. Max is 55 lbs and 56 cm tall. His Hips are OFA Good. He received a NAVHDA Prize II in Natural Ability. Max has also one HRC started pass.
Maxs’ confirmation has been evaluated as Very Good, with the evaluator commenting that he is a beautiful dog to watch work. In the field his full furnishings and setter tail make for a heart stopping point. He is the hallmark product of Dick Owens Riverhills Kennel – an exceptionally well balanced dog with a stylish and intense point. He is an emotionally stabile dog – he is able to turn his prey drive off in the house and is a wonderful family pet.
His ability and temperament cannot be fully appreciated unless you know how awful his early training was. Gary says “I did such a poor job in training him as a young pup – I put way too much pressure on him during repetitive drills. Two months before his NA test he completely shut down. If not for the help of other Small Munsterlander Club members Mike Palmitier, Russ & Beth Phillips and Ern Van Noller he never would have bounced back and achieved a N/A 107 Prize II”.
Max is an extremely intelligent dog and excels at anything that involves his nose. His most obvious ability is his pointing. He was pointing wing on strings and birds at 3-4 months. He was naturally steady to shot without any training, and completing his steadiness training was easy and very enjoyable. He is an absolute terror on woodcock and ruffed grouse.
He is a phenomenal tracker, executing his first duck drag at 5 months. He is trained to blood track and has tracked bow shot deer. Max is a working retriever and spends over14 days in the marsh each fall. He is an incredible marker of downed birds. He can mark the dropped bird, mark off the gun, and in heavy cover when out of site of the hunter can mark the sound of the shot – he will be out of site and the gunner drops a trapped bird and the bird will be delivered to hand sometimes before the gun is reloaded.
